We know Loreto

Writer's picture: danbdanb

Last week our cousins Tangi and John joined us for a action packed week. John made an interesting comment; “Staying with people who live in the region is the best way to experience the area.  We get to see and do things that would not otherwise be possible without local knowledge.”  Although that may mean that we have been here too long, we do feel like we know Loreto.

Hiking up Tripui trails

After being here for almost 3 months we definitely have the lay of the land.  We know what each of the various grocery stores uniquely have and when it is best to go.  We know the good hikes, the great lunch spots, where to find various pieces and parts, where the best spot is to watch

Taking time to make friends with the local Burro

With limited exposure, I will venture to say that Loreto is my favorite destination in Mexico.  The airport is easy, the town is small but it has everything needed.  The scenery is breathtaking, great islands to explore, a welcoming culture, fun shops and restaurants and white sand beaches to hang out on.  I would recommend Loreto to anyone looking to visit Mexico that does not want to stay in a luxury resort.

Although the weather was the coolest we have experienced so far (low 70’s) we were still able to take advantage of swimming, snorkeling and paddle boarding as well as many hikes with Tangi and John.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!!

While at anchor in Bahai Salinas we saw Dreamcatcher, an Island Packet 44 that we recognized from 24 years ago (possibly the first Island Packet we ever set foot on).  Fellow Ocean Cruising Club members, this was the same boat we sailed alongside from Tonga to Fiji and then ultimately New Zealand in 1999.

Reunion after 25 years with Dreamcatcher!

It was so much fun to catch up with them although they (and us) looked a quarter of a century older.  Dreamcatcher continued their sail around the world (while we shipped our boat home from New Zealand ) and now they've settled with winters in the Sea of Cortez.  Bruce, who was a Urologist, is credited for resetting my broken toe in Fiji a mere 24 years ago.  My toe still looks good – Thank you Bruce!

One of the aspects that is great about cruising is that you make friends, say good bye as you depart for different locations and as in this case meet up again--some 24 years later.  This is something that I really appreciate and enjoy!

And now, having made the most of our time in Loreto....Onward!
