Rainy point

Writer: jeannebjeanneb

We've been able to catch some crab and shrimp this week. It's been very tasty and the boat cat agrees and now is very cranky when there isn't a spare piece of crab meat for her to snack on.

The few marinas in this area are empty and we've enjoyed meeting the caretakers/owners and getting to know more about what the locals are doing (aka hotspots for shrimp and crab). As well as hear about the plans for summer improvements that they are working on now that the brunt of winter has passed.

With spring starting to be felt here we've seen our first bear out searching for some seafood of his own. This guy, was about 100' from on our boat, turning over rocks on the small islet right next to our anchorage. He didn't seem to mind the pelting cold rain and we were pleased that he wasn't too interested in us. He just went about his bear business.

We are starting to lose track of the days. We've anchored out for about a week and each day rolls into the next. When we are at anchor, there isn't always a place to walk -- due to the 1.) bears 2.) steep cliffs surrounding the water. (Do you see the face on the one cliff below?)

So today, we finally decided to head back into a 'village' (check out https://kwaxwalawadi.com/). Here we enjoyed a nice walk when the rain stopped for about 2 hours and got the scoop on all sorts of local news. They are planning to install new docks this season. You can get a water taxi to Echo Bay from Port McNeill and stay in one of their floating cabins. Would be fun in the summer! Maybe not as fun in April, unless you like being cold and wet. Onward!
