A few days ago we arrived in Zihuatanejo. Zihuatanejo is a delightful, walkable fishing town. After three days of trying to clear in with the Port Captain (he apparently was on vacation), we enjoyed wandering around town. There are many streets closed to traffic filled with shops selling the usual touristy things, clothing, food and boutique hotels. It is no surprise to us that it is a very popular place for ex-pats and tourists.
The town's central Mercado (market) is large, sprawling and conveniently located close to our anchorage. We've now been back multiple times to get fresh vegetables which has enhanced our breakfasts, lunches and dinners. We've managed to find pretty much all we've needed to eat and found paper for printer and even got our haircut ($5/each).
Yesterday, we went to a very large supermarket. We realized that we hadn't been in a large commercial grocery store since September! I forgot how excited I could be about the simple thing of going to a grocery store! It was all very exciting. We found all sorts of things that we hadn't seen for months -- almond milk, chocolate bars and steaks.
At one point in my career, I was the continuous improvement czar for a large tech organization. I guess old habits die hard as this week, Dan and I joined up with a local Mexican cooking school to learn how to make Chile Relleno (translated: Stuffed Peppers) five different ways. The class had 16 participants. It lasted several hours.
The instructor had lots of good stories to share about the different chiles, the history of where the different styles of rellenos came from as well as helping us with how to find the ingredients in the local market.
The class was great fun. We ended the morning with lunch of Chile Rellenos and hibiscus juice. Unfortunately Chile Rellenos are not my favorite but at least Dan learned a lot -- most importantly that he'll likely only buy them in restaurants because they are far too much work to make!
Tonight we are headed into town with the crew from another boat in the bay in hopes of fish & chips and live music. The weather has been in the upper 80's, fairly humid and we are thankful that there have been some clouds to keep things a bit cooler. We are loving this town and think we'll stay a bit longer than originally planned!
