We've travelled our first 150 miles. We are already [re] learning that traveling is a function of the wind, the temperature and the tide -- and drives everything -- what you eat, what you do, and where you go. As we passed Chrome Island, in 1.5M seas, with 25 knots of wind on our stern, we were thankful we weren't headed the opposite direction. It was 'spirited' as Dan says. I forgot to eat. Dan was working most of the day, so I was at the helm for most of 8 hours. It took us a good while to tie up properly against the 25 knot cross breeze. Note to self, hungry sailor is a cranky sailor.
The winds have been favorable up to this point. However, we will be holding tight for at least 24 hours to wait out a bit of wind that is more than our liking! Too much orange/dark red for me...I prefer green.
We breezed past the San Juan Islands, and had to redirect our path to clear Canadian customs in Sidney BC at which we have a very quite anchorage. Then onward to Ganges to enjoy a nice walk down the boardwalk, a very calm and cold evening and then a perfectly windless (but freezing) day in the Gulf Islands.
We had a great visit to Newcastle Island, near Nanaimo and got to stay at the dock, which I hadn't done since my 19th birthday. We had the place to ourselves, although two mischievous sea otters managed to climb onboard, and jumped off the bow. I wasn't fast enough to catch it on film. We had ice on the deck when we left in the morning.
Meanwhile, in other news. Leia, boat cat, is adjusting or at least we like to hope so. Dan caught her in this awkward pose. She has poked her head above deck now a few times, so must be getting her sea legs. She does NOT like the cold and wakes me up when the cabin is below 50 degrees by sitting as close to my head as she dares.
