A new definition of "single-handing"

As sailors we are generally adept at adjusting to the wind, tide and seasons. In this case, our four hands, were now 3 and I only have one hand for the boat--and no spare hand to do anything else. I'm pretty sure Dan's dream of single-handing, did not include waiting on me hand and foot!!! We've tweaked our plans and made the best of things. With family meeting us in Juneau this week, it was a welcome relief to me to take my mind off of surgery that was scheduled in a week. I was now a liability, and perhaps more work than if Dan were on his own. It is so frustrating to not be able to do anything, and not be able to contribute. However, with my wrist temporarily put in place, pain was relieved and for the most part we were able to get back 'out there'. Can't let this sort of setback linger, have to be resilient, have to keep going.

my spot for the last few days

First stop was to go back to Crab cove in Funter Bay as we didn't really get to enjoy it the first time around. With our added crew (my brother Dave & Elise), Dan of course was able to do all the sailing (and take care of me), while I pretty much laid around, or kept whale lookout. Its amazing how many things on the boat work easily for right handed people, and are extremely ill placed for lefties. Especially lefties in training.

Dave, designated crab cleaner

Crab cove did not disappoint. We ate crab for breakfast and lunch. And had fresh halibut and rockfish for dinners.

First catch of the day

We got to see the bubble net feeding humpback whales for a good hour while we were fishing & catching just north of Juneau. By about day 5 I'd figured out marginal success in driving one handed, while the rest fished. We closed out their visit with a good dumping of Juneau rain.

When the day came for surgery, I was treated with fabulous care at the Bartlett Outpatient Surgery Center. Apparently, all went well and I carry more micro screws than a pair of glasses and a fine metal plate that is bound to cause good fun at airports. Bonus, they fixed that carpal tunnel too...which will be nice when I'm typing again!

Devil's Club at Taku Harbor

Now 12 days since-wrist-breaking, with our son Dylan on board, we've set our sails south. We are enjoying the lush Taku Harbor, and will continue south towards Petersburg.

I'm more excited than ever to get to warmer weather as I can't fit my arm into any long sleeved shirts. Its almost July and the high temp today is 53/low 40. Tomorrow high is 49! I'm going to have to get the electric blanket back out. Onward!
